Theatre of dreams

Dental Phobia Day (Date TBC)

“The real theatre of dreams”

To those who suffer from a dental phobia the very thought of visiting the dentist can be the stuff of nightmares.

A phobia of the dentist can often begin in childhood and can be the result of a bad or unpleasant experience but this isn’t always the case.

Parkway Clinic has been working closely with dental phobia suffers for over 20 years using a combination of a calm considerate approach and unconscious sedation under general anaesthesia.

We at the Parkway are happy to announce our first annual Dental Phobia Seminar.

The seminar is a chance for those who suffer from a dental phobia to come and see the facilities and meet the friendly and caring staff in a relaxing environment.

Everyone who decides to come to the seminar will be entitled to a free dental phobia consultation with our lead anaesthetist and Parkway director, Dr Philip Majoe.

It would also be a chance for suffers to familiarise themselves around dental surgeries, theatres and dental equipment and to ask any questions they’ve never felt able to ask.

Meet the dentists, doctors, dental nurses and treatment coordinators who make up one of the most qualified and experienced dental teams within the U.K

For those who attend the seminar and would like to arrange treatment either on the day, or later down the line The Parkway offers a free consultation on all dental treatments.

Sign up today or continue to read to learn more about the Parkway, different types of dental phobia or the dental phobic patient pathway.

Types of Phobia

Fear of the dentist – Many people fear dental treatment due to the dentist themselves. Often the dentist is “dehumanised” by the patient and is viewed the same way a person might view a spider.

This fear might be the result of a bad experience with a previous dentist, often in childhood. Or the belief that the dentist themselves does not mind causing pain as long as the treatment is complete.

This type of fear is one of the easiest to overcome.

During the dental phobia seminar you will be able to meet and familiarise yourself with many of our dentists and will give you the opportunity to realise that they are just like you.

Every member of staff on every occasion I’ve visited treats you with warmth and empathy. I’ve gone from a severely nervous patient to one who can chat and laugh at check ups and hygienist visits. My family and friends would say that’s a miracle.

At the Parkway we pride ourselves on building trusting relationships between our dentists and patients to help them overcome fears or anxiety.

Fear of Pain – This is an obvious fear most of us feel. As a species it is in our nature to avoid pain at all costs and this fear can prevent people from seeking dental treatment.

During the seminar you would learn about the many ways we can remove pain from the equation by using a combination of a gentle kind approach and by using numbing gels and anaesthetics.

I’ve had done really bad experiences lately with dentist, and having heard so many good things about Parkway I thought I’d give it a go. You certainly get what you pay for, and my dentist Eirini was absolutely amazing! The injections, even in the roof of the mouth didn’t hurt, and the extraction was pain free! Will definitely be using Parkway for the future!

Fear of drill or dental equipment (Needles etc)

Many patients can suffer from this fear. Even the sound of a dental drill can lead to a serious anxiety attack.

For others the fear of needles can be enough to send a person running for the door.

The two best ways to combat these issues are either by exposure (Holding or listening to the tools) or by distraction techniques.

Every patient is different so the use of a blindfold or ear plugs might be an option for you.

During the seminar you will have the chance to inspect, hold and even use some of the dental tools to help reassure you that there is nothing to worry about.

Even with this technique not all patients are able to go through the treatment. For this we also offer General anaesthetic in our theatre of dreams.

General Anaesthesia is a state of controlled unconsciousness where medications are used to send you to sleep. You are unaware of the surgery and will not feel any pain or discomfort. This is a popular treatment with those with phobia.

Patient Journey

Before

It is a good idea to visit PWC before your appointment to familiarise yourself with the Clinic. You are welcome to bring a friend or companion with you for support.

During:

Firstly, we will LISTEN to your concerns. We will then LOOK to see how we can help you. We will aim to carryout a full examination which may include taking some radiographs. We understand that dental phobia is something that you are not always in control of, and it is important that you remain in control of your limits. We can then SPEAK to you about the best way forward for you. This may include some help with Sedation or General Anaesthetic, which our Anaesthetist will be able to discuss with you.

After

You will have the opportunity to ask questions before leaving. You may prefer to discuss your options with a family member or friend too. If you decide to go ahead with treatment, an appointment can be made at your convenience. In the meantime you are welcome to contact Parkway Clinic to discuss further queries.
